Guest Post: How To Save And Still Eat Healthy

This week while I'm away, I've asked some blogging friends to share some posts with you.  If they are new to you, please stop by and show them some love!

I'm actually loving this post because we've been trying to change to eating healthier foods, and I couldn't have said these things better myself!  Enjoy!

The following is a guest post from Lessie. Lessie is a Stay at Home Mom of 2 little girls (5 and 6 years old). She blogs at MyCouponLady.com and loves saving people money.

I have been asked MANY times how I can serve my family healthy food AND still coupon. The question is loaded, since it implies that all coupons are issued for heavily processed and unhealthy foods. There are, however, increasingly more coupons being issued for foods that are healthy, organic and all natural products.

So, here is my advice if you have been wondering how to use coupons and still eat right.
  1. Look for coupons that are for staples.
    • Rice
    • Pasta
    • Cereals
    • Canned & Frozen Veggies
    • Condiments – Ketchup, Mustard, Hot Sauce
    • Canned Tomatoes
    • Pasta Sauces
    • Canned/Pouch Tuna
    • Butter (freezes well)
  2. Look for coupons on Fresh Veggies & Fruits. Yes, Virginia, these do exist. The ones that come to mind quickly are the coupons issued for Cuties & Bagged Salads. However, there are others issued, and sometimes they aren’t even for specific items. Just last week, I received a packet of coupons from my local Fry’s. The coupons contained a FREE dozen eggs and a $3 off $10 in produce.
  3. To save even bigger, get better produce and support locally grown produce, hit the local farmer’s market. OR, you can even join a local Farmers’ Co-Op. This may require a bit of a commitment, but it is well worth it.
  4. Contact manufacturers directly. If you LOVE Mom’s Best All Natural Cereal then contact Mom’s Best. Same goes for any product that you love. Manufacturers are used to getting emails and contacts from people when they are dissatisfied, how awesome it is to tell them how much you love their product. By doing this, they often send packets of coupons to you. A lot of times, the coupons even have a coupon or two for free products.
  5. Save money on toiletries to afford the more expensive items that you can’t find a coupon for. I prepare a CVS Grand Plan each week and post it on MyCouponLady.com. If you were to purchase every item in the Grand Plan each week, you would stay stocked up on toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and so on. You would be able to spend $5 or less and stay completely stocked up. This would allow you to spend the extra money that you have saved on the items that you can’t get with coupons.
  6. Try other brands. You may find that, even though you LOVE the Prego Sauce, that you will love the Ragu Sauce just as well. Maybe not, but it is worth a try. Since both are essentially the same raw ingredients, it is worth giving them a try. Don’t be brand-loyal unless you have to be.
  7. Find out if your store allows competitor coupons. If so, then hit wholefoodsmarket.com/coupons and print store coupons from there that you can then combine with your manufacturer’s coupons to get an even better deal on Organic or all natural foods. Also, for more manufacturer’s coupons, you can visit www.mambosprouts.com/free-coupons/
