Weekly Goals

Last week I shared my list of goals for the week:

  • Organize my recipe binder.
  • Finish going through my clothes.
  • Clean my desk.
  • Keep up with the laundry/dishes.
  • Keep up with email.
  • Use up all cooked ham and chicken.

I am very pleased to say that I was able to accomplish ALL of these things.   I did toss one bag of ham into the freezer all by itself, but it can be made into sandwiches later, so it's all good.

This week is a little bit different for making goals, as there are things that I *have* to get done as opposed to things that I'd like to get done.

Our pets are causing some major grief around here right now.  The kitties have been using the carpet instead of the little box, and it's flea season!

Yesterday, my husband steam cleaned the carpet in question and we applied various odor and urine removing treatments.  I continued this process today trying to remove all the smell, and I also crawled under my desk on my hand and and knees with Simple Green and wet rags and scrub brushes and CLEANED the floor underneath the litter box.  That was not a pleasant task, but it is over, and I've laid paper down under it for future "spills".  BLEH!

On Wednesay morning, the exterminator is coming.   We have them on a 3 month rotation, so it happened to be time.   I asked for the flea treatment, but that will involve picking up all items off of the floors, including closets (we tackled my girls room tonight--playroom tomorrow!), and vacuuming the whole house beforehand, plus leaving the house for 2-4 hours.  I'm very glad that I participated in the 4 Weeks To A More Organized Home Challenge this past month because I don't have nearly as much work to do since most of the cleaning has recently been taken care of.

So here is my list of goals for the week:

  • Clean Carpets  (done, and drying)
  • Clean floor under little box  (done)
  • Bathe cats  (my husbands job!  HAHA)
  • Get ready for exterminator  (working on it!)
  • Continue To Keep Up With Email  (I've added cleaning out my facebook newsfeed to this goal.  I've unliked a ton of pages that were just taking up space in my newsfeed, and I can actually see my friends again!  Seriously you guys...I was following well over 500 blog pages on my facebook.   That is simply not necessary!  Of course I have my favorites that I would never abandon, but I had to say enough is enough!)
  • Continue to keep up with laundry/dishes.  (Still doing well with this one--doing one load of each per day).
  • Finish up a few organizing tasks in the kitchen--will schedule myself one per day after Mr. Exterminator is over with.
  • Get up 5 minutes before my daughter's alarm each morning.   (She's been poking me going MOMMY GET UP!  Your alarm is going off!...Sad times!)  This will be 6:25 and I plan to shave 5 minutes off of that each week until I'm getting up by 6.
  • Go to bed at a decent time each night.   (Hmmm....what is decent these days?)   I've been past midnight going to bed most nights, and when I've gone to bed I've had trouble sleeping, so I am tired and grumpy.  Yes, I am.   I want to be in bed by 10pm each night.  As it is currently 10:52, obviously, that is not happening tonight.   My goal this week is to bed by 11:45, and I intend to shave 15 minutes off of that each week until I am going to bed by 10.   Knowing me, I'll never make it before 10:30, but I'm being optimistic.  ;)
  • Pick out a new novel  (I've got a TON of Kindle downloads--all FREE of course!) and begin reading it.  --Obviously this will wreak havoc on the previous goal....but I do so love to read!

Wow...that looks like a much longer list typed than it does on my little notebook paper here...But I'll be positive and say that I am up for it!

Also, Money Saving Mom announced a new challenge for May that I'm super excited about--freezer cooking!  =D

I'm not sure I'll be participating everyday, but I have been wanting to do more freezer cooking posts, so I'm going to try my best to follow along as I am able!

Do You Need To Earn Some Extra Cash? How About Surveys?

I'm going to be honest....I've been ignoring my online survey emails for FAR too long!   If you are like me, you could really use a way to earn a little extra spending money!  I've been scouring the web looking for ways to earn from home these past few days...ignoring the opportunities that were sitting right in my email!

Before I had kids, I used to take ALOT of online surveys.  I actually just found a handwritten list as I was cleaning out my desk that had over 800 survey companies listed, and many highlighted that I had registered with.   I was getting a steady stream on checks in the mail...$5 here, $10 there, $50 here.  It wasn't alot, and it wasn't from one place, but it did add up!

Here are a few of my favorite survey sites that are legitimate and have paid me!  I suggest signing up with multiple (AKA many, many) sites in order to earn anything worthwhile, and I also suggest doing so with a free email solely for that purpose!

Menu Plan For 4/30-5/6

I've had a pretty busy cooking week this past week.  I haven't had a chance to tell you all about it yet, but I will!  I am also going to have a pretty busy cooking week next week, and one that will require a ton of planning (more about this to more, as well!), SO I'm giving myself a break and eating from the freezer this week.  I mean, that's why I have freezer meals, right?   I am also going to be busy preparing for the exterminator to come on Wednesday morning (everything has to be off the floors and the entire house vacuumed!) so I think not having to worry with dinner preparations will help where that is concerned, also.

So, here's what I've got planned for this week, and these are subject to get switched around according to my mood. ;)

Monday:  Pork Stew
Tuesday:  Turkey Taco Quiche
Wednesday:  Ham & Potato Soup  (recipe coming soon!)
Thursday:  Vegetable Beef Soup
Friday:  Gumbo
Saturday:  Something grilled!
Sunday:  Breakfast

I've also got some leftover pizza dough and toppings, so I will be making some pizza pockets to freeze for lunches.

Weekly Totals: Aldi & Tom Thumb

Today I made another trip out to Aldi, and since I was passing by Tom Thumb, I decided to stop in and grab a few things.

Here's what I picked up at Tom Thumb:

Total Shelf Price:   $59.01
Total Sale Price:    $24.74    Already 58% Savings!!

Price Paid After Coupons:  $11.71    80% Savings!!!

Then on to Aldi where I stocked up on produce and found a really great deal on turkey sausage!

You can see those red stickers on the Jennie-O Italian Turkey Sausage...those are $2 off, bringing the price down to just $1.69 per pack (which are slightly over 1lb each).  I thought this was a great stock up price, so I grabbed for of them, and stuck 3 right into the freezer.  The other I cooked up tonight and tossed on our homemade pizzas.  =)

The fries were also marked down to $0.99 per pack, and the My Little Pony  (the one my daughter has been eyeing everytime we go in there) was marked down to $3.99, and she was wanting to go back with her own money and get it the other day, but I decided to grab it as a birthday present to go along with the pool I got, which I suppose is technically for the whole family....

All of this, including 4 packs of sausage, a birthday gift, and all of that produce, cost me just $46.56.

Oh, and I grabbed a chocolate Almond milk since I was out of Silk.   It's not *dark* chocolate, but it's not bad either. ;)

Altogether, I spent $58.27 today.  This is the first shopping I've done since Saturday's trips to Aldi and Tom Thumb.    Adding that to what I spent today puts me at $85.82 for the week.  Slightly over budget, but today was also payday.  However, since I was well under budget for the year, this brings my avereage spending to just $70.74/week spread over the 16 weeks so far!    I try to spend $70-$75 per week so I'm right on track!

How did you do this week?

4 Weeks To A More Organized Home: Day 20 (Final Day)

Today is the very last assignment of this series over at Money Saving Mom.

Here's what we were supposed to tackle today:

--Get dressed in something that makes you feel great.
--Sit down with a cup of coffee or tea, refer to your list of weekly goals, and make a list of no more than 5-7 specific things you want to accomplish today.
--Complete your morning routine.
--Clean out and re-organize your medicine cupboard(s). Check expiration dates on medicines and throw out any that are expired. --Set the timer for at least 15 minutes and do something you really enjoy and that relaxes and rejuvenates you. If you need ideas, here are a few: read, write, call a friend, pray, exercise, bake, play with your children, laugh with your husband, stop by the bookstore and browse the book selection, work in the garden, or take a nap! Take some time to just stop and enjoy life today!

Well last night I had a horrible time getting to sleep, first off.  I tossed and turned until about 4am and finally went and laid on the couch and slept until about 6:15 when my alarms were going off.  Not a good start to the day, but I couldn't go back to bed because we were all out of milk, and I HAD to go to the store!  (more on that in a bit)

But I was having a little trouble getting going this morning, so I decided to scratch one thing off my list--cleaning off the top of my desk!

It was really, really messy.  Pens everywhere, toys I'd taken away, papers..you name it!   I had already made a little bit of progress on this last night when I reorganized my recipe binder while watching TV.  That cleared up a huge stack of loose papers (recipes I'd printed), so this morning I just wanted to hurry up and get it finished.  I still have the drawer and cabinets to tackle, and the top--that will be no small task, I'm sure--but at least the part I can see is looking much better.  I had to take a picture because I'm sure it won't stay that way long!  (Note:  There's already a stack of clipped coupons!)

Then we shopped, came home, had lunch, then I laid my daughter down for a very brief nap before we had to go up to the elementary school for the Kindergarten teachers surprise birthday party.  And boy, was she ever surprised!   That ended with about 15 minutes left in the school day, so I went ahead and just checked my daughter out and brought her home.

I put some pizza dough in the bread machine, and we all laid down to watch cartoons.  I dozed off, so I guess that was my nap.  They helped themselves to some candy for a snack...=/

Then we made pizza...

They had a great time "decorating" theirs.  They said they made a caterpillar and a butterfly and a kitten out of ham and pepperoni.  Ha!  But the big one actually ATE the pizza, which is HUGE!  Seriously, have you ever seen a kid go into Cici's and eat only soup and salad??!!??  That one up there in the blue...that'd be her!

My husband was working tonight, and I had a headache after dinner.  They asked to stay up and have movie night, like I normally allow them to do on Friday's and let daddy tuck them in when he gets home.  They put on Pete's Dragon, and I spent most of the evening trying to clear out my facebook feed (and tune out Pete!)   That ended up being part of my getting a handle on my email goal, and I think I made some pretty good progress with that.

I did not get to my medicine cabinets, but honestly I did that about a month ago just before this challenge began, so they are all still in good shape.

At the end of this challenge, I must say I felt that I did more cleaning than organizing, but I suppose that all of that goes together.  Plus, it all needed to be done, and I am feeling MUCH better about my home.  I really liked having the daily assignments, and I think I've decided to try again to follow along with the FlyLady.  I've never been able to keep up, but maybe now that I'm sort of in the habit, I can!

Money Saving Money promised another challenge starting in May.  I'm not sure what it ism or if I will blog along with it, but I'm curious to see what it will be!   Thank you all for sticking around while I participated in this challenge.  I've been in much better spirits lately and don't feel nearly as overwhelmed by everything that needed to be done as I was when I was trying to do it all in one day and getting burned out!  I actually *feel* more organized and that I can think more clearly, so I think the challenge has been successful.   Now, if only i can keep it up!  =)

4 Weeks To A More Organized Home: Day 19

Almost to the end of this little challenge!  Tomorrow will be the last day, and I'm not sure I'll known what to do with myself!  Last night I said I was going to go read a bit and find some motivation for today.  Well I ended up doing laundry and watching River Monsters with my husband, but I did wake up pretty motivated today!

Today's assignment was as follows:

--Get dressed in something that makes you feel great.
--Sit down with a cup of coffee or tea, refer to your list of weekly goals, and make a list of no more than 5-7 specific things you want to accomplish today.
--Complete your morning routine.
--Set the timer for 15 minutes and wipe down your windowsills and baseboards around your windows (if you didn’t wipe these when we wiped down the baseboards earlier this month).
--Clean your windows and blinds and/or window treatments. If you want to get really ambitious, you can take the screens off (if you have screens) and clean the outside of your windows. Or, you can just use window cleaner and clean your windows on the inside. Dust or wash your blinds. Remove any washable window treatments and launder them.--Find 7 items to get rid of today. Throw them out, stick them in a donate or garage sale box, give them to a friend who can use them, or list them on Craigslist or eBay.

I only have mini-blinds in my house, so I didn't have any curtains to take down and wash.  I decided to get an early start on wiping the bases of the windows.   They were all pretty dirty, and some of them I noticed needed to be sealed better because there was some mold along the edges, especially in out bedroom.  Could be why my allergies have been so bad!

After, I wiped them down, I began dusting them.  I had found my swiffer duster when I cleaned off the top of my fridge last week, so I grabbed it and got started.  Once I started looking for dust, I started seeing dust *everywhere*!   All those tall places that my 5'3" self would never notice!  My daughter even wanted to help dust!

After all of that, she asked to go for a walk, so we did.  We went to the little neighborhood park and swang for a bit, then came home and had lunch.

When I got her down for a nap, I decided to finish going through the clothes in my closet.   I'm slightly appalled at the amount of clothes that I had in my closet, and do not know why I didn't purge these things years ago!   This is everything that I pulled out of my closet the past few days to get rid of.

See?  Ridiculous, right?  And I still have a ton of clothes in my closet.  I may even go back through and reevaluate what I actually wear, especially with the shirts.   The bigger my "to sell" pile gets, the more excited I get about having my first garage sale!  Next to purge are the husband's clothes!

After dinner, I made a small dent in the cleaning of my desk, but you would never know it...Still a lot of work to be done on that, but I still intend to have it done before the weekend is over.

I'm anxious to see what the last assignment is, but I hope its something easy because I plan to go shopping tomorrow, and then I have to go up to the school because they are giving my daughter's teacher a surprise birthday party (Shhhhhhh!) so I won't be home much!

4 Weeks To A More Organized Home: Day 18

I had a ton of trouble falling asleep last night.  I seem to every Tuesday just knowing I need to be up extra early, but even though I was a little sluggish getting out of bed, I still got all my grocery ads posted before 10am!  That's huge for me!

Those are always the biggest chunk of my day on Wednesdays, so I was glad to see a pretty easy assignment for Day 18:

--Get dressed in something that makes you feel great.
--Sit down with a cup of coffee or tea, refer to your list of weekly goals, and make a list of no more than 5-7 specific things you want to accomplish today.
--Complete your morning routine.
--Set the timer for 15 minutes and vacuum the main living areas of your home.
--Vacuum your carpeted closets. Sweep or mop the floor in those closets without carpet. Remove all items from the closet floor and get rid of clutter, trash, and items that don’t belong in that closet.
--Find 7 items to get rid of today. Throw them out, stick them in a donate or garage sale box, give them to a friend who can use them, or list them on Craigslist or eBay.

At 10am, I took my daughter to story time at the library.  Then I came home to an email from my other daughter's teacher that she had forgotten her lunchbox.   It was sitting right in the fridge, so off I went to take it to her 5 minutes before her lunch began.

Then we came home and had our own lunch.  I put her down for a nap, and I laid myself right down on the couch and took my own.  I probably shouldn't have, or I would have been able to relax once I got them to sleep, but me and 3 1/2 hours of sleep to not work well together!

I got her from the bus, and we did homework.  I got them to clear the living room floor while I started dinner, and then I vacuumed the living room, dining room, and hallway while dinner cooked.   I meant to get to this yesterday anyway, and I'm glad I took the time to do it because I realized that my vacuum was clogged and not picking anything up, so I was able to clear that out and get it back working properly.

After I got them to bed, I tackled my closet.  I had just cleaned their's out recently, so I was not too worried about them.   There wasn't any clutter on the floor of my closet, likely because we just cleaned it out about 6 weeks ago to get to our suitcases.  It had been a long time since it had been vacuumed though!

While I was in there, I remembered one of my weekly goals was to go through my pants and get rid of what I couldn't wear anymore.   I never thought that would be such a depressing task, although I'm not really sure what I was still doing hanging on to half of those pants from college anyways.   I made it through roughly half of the pants I had hanging in my closet, and so far I've found 12 pair to put into the garage sale pile.   I'm sure to find even more when I finish that task.

The only other thing on my list for today was to make some banana bread before my bananas were too far gone, and I've got it in the oven baking right now, as well as my laundry drying, and I still need to do the dishes!  (All things I would have gotten done when I was napping!)

I'm off to go finish all of that up, pick out a new novel to begin reading, and try to find some more motivation for tomorrow, because I was certainly lacking today!

4 Weeks To More Organized Home: Day 17

It was shaping up to be another busy day around here before I even saw my Day 17 assignment!  I guess things really aren't completely back to normal after all of my houseguests.

I decided this morning to do some impromptu rearranging (moving kid's desk to room and table from room to living room).  That was on my list, but I didn't get it done yet.  I also wanted to make a run to Albertsons, but once I saw everything else I needed to do, I realized that gathering coupons wasn't going to happen, nor was there anything on sale that I couldn't live without, so I let it go!

Here was the assignment that was posted this morning:

--Get dressed in something that makes you feel great.  (I did this first thing, and halfway through the day I realized my shirt was on backwards!  LOL)
--Sit down with a cup of coffee or tea, refer to your list of weekly goals, and make a list of no more than 5-7 specific things you want to accomplish today.  (ok, I admit mine had a few more than that!)
--Complete your morning routine.  (I'm still working on getting out of bed before the kids alarm goes off...not happening!)
--Set the timer for 15 minutes and do a quick-clean of your bathroom.

--Clean out and reorganized your kitchen cupboards and pantry.--Find 7 items to get rid of today. Throw them out, stick them in a donate or garage sale box, give them to a friend who can use them, or list them on Craigslist or eBay.

I started the day with washing some laundry and finishing the large pots and pans that didn't fit into the dishwasher from yesterday's massive cooking day!  I found out that my 2 year old loves to dry pots!  She was actually angry when there were no more!

I was planning on doing a baking day today, and getting some muffins made for the freezer, but I honestly wasn't sure if I had all the ingredients in my pantry or not.  So, when I saw this task on the list, I thought that would be a logical first step, and baking could wait (although my bananas won't wait too long!)

I was planning on tackling the pantry during naptime after lunch, but for some reason my daughter passed out on the couch around 11am and slept until 12:45!

If you look very closely, there are two little doggies crammed into that sunny spot on the back of the couch!
So, I decided to go ahead and tackle the pantry while she slept.  Here's what it looked like to begin with:

It was still fairly well organized as far as what belongs on what shelf, but there were a few things that needed to be moved around.  I went shelf by shelf from top to bottom, took everything out, wiped down the shelves and dried them, and then put back the items that belonged on that shelf.

Here's what it looks like now  (my husband even noticed it was neat, and he's not one to notice such things!)

I also found this at the bottom (planting it is going on my list for tomorrow!)

Here are my things I'm getting rid of:

I had a little kitchen mishap yesterday that blackened a few of my burner covers.  I didn't think there was a point in keeping the one non-burnt one without a matching set,s o I tossed them all.  The corn holder thingamabobs rusted in the dishwasher....=(  and the glass and bowl were cracked and leaked.

As soon as a finished this up, my daughter woke up from her little nap.  We had lunch and played a bit, and then we tidied up the bathrooms.   After her sister got home, and my husband got home, I cooked a delicious potato soup with ham and broccoli.   It was my first time ever making a potato soup and it come our wonderful.  We even put away 4 containers of it in the freezer, so I got some freezer cooking in after all (I wasn't quite sure how much the recipe would make since I'd never made it).  I will share the recipe with you all soon!

After dinner, and feeling pretty accomplished for the day, we took the girls out for a bike ride around the neighborhood before dinner.  The weather was gorgeous, and they had a good time!  The little one is getting pretty good at pedaling, too!

Now it's time to head to bed and rest up for another busy day tomorrow--new grocery ads come out, so I'll be up early posting the deals!  Maybe I can squeeze in some muffin baking time!  ;)
