Last Day Of The Month: A Checklist

I cannot believe that it is already December 31st!  I can't believe how fast this month has flown by!

I know that its been a hectic time of year with all the holidays, and sometimes couponing and other saving  methods get pushed to the side for the sack of time and convenience.

I know many people make goals to get their spending/saving back on track in the new year, so I thought a list of a few things that would help you get 2012 off to a good start would be helpful!

1)  Many coupon sites reset on the first of the month, removing last month's coupons, and replacing them with new coupons.  Head over to the following sites and make sure you've printed anything you may need:

Print FREE Grocery Coupons at Home

Coupon Network

Also check here to see if there are any stand alone printables that you missed:

2)  Check your e-coupons expiration dates:

Cellfire

SavingStar

Turn Your Everyday Spending into College Savings!

3.  Go through your newspaper coupons.  Check for coupons expiring today.  If there are any that you can't bear to let expire, go shopping!  (Just remember that if you do go shopping just to use coupons you are spending money that you perhaps would not have, so its ok to let them expire!)

Tomorrow I will have a list of things to do on the first of the month!

Friday Must-Read Rewind

I've been very very busy cleaning my house this week, so this list is going to be a little bit short, but I did read a couple things that I wanted to share.

First, some great things to think about as we head into the new year:  How to avoid things that break the budget.

Second, this is mostly aimed at bloggers, but great tips for anyone really:  How to avoid things that steal your time.

El Rio Grande Trip 12/30

I made a trip over to El Rio Grande today to get some of the great meat and produce deals that they had this week.  I intended to also get some of the $0.99/lb green beans, but they didn't look very good, so I decided not to.

Here's what I got:

~ 3 lbs. of Tilapia @ $1.98/lb
~7 lbs. of chicken breast @ $0.99/lb
~6 lb.s of pork stew meat @ $1.19/lb
3lb. pack of smoked sausage $3.99
cabbage @ 3lbs for $1
carrots @ $0.69
cucumbers 3 for $1
avocados  5 for $1

Spent $27.xx

This is the only shopping I've done all week, and will only need to make a quick run into Aldi for milk and bread.  That means I actually have not even touched a coupon!

Now I've got a ton of meat in my freezer, and I haven't been doing a whole lot of cooking lately, so I need to take inventory of my freezer and come up with a meal plan to use up some of the things that I have on hand.

I'm going to try to not do too much shopping over the next few weeks, as my husbands last check came early before Christmas, so the money needs to stretch just a bit longer than usual.

Did you do any shopping this week?

Looking To Get Organized In The New Year?

I know many of us are trying to become more organized and get some control over all the chaos and clutter in their lives in the new year.

I have found several websites that offer different FREE services that can help with this, so I thought I would share a few of my favorites below.

If meal planning is on your agenda, FOOD ON THE TABLE is one of my absolute favorites:

If you are looking for a service that helps you keep your online accounts in order, try Manilla:

Here's a brand new one that is about to start up (so I haven't tried it), but they have an opportunity to win a Kindle Fire.

$2 Restaurant.com Gift Certificates

Restaurant.com Weekly Promo Offer 300 x 250

What I love most about Restaurant.com is that they always seem to have a discount code available.  You can just about always dine for half price with these.

Here's how it works:

  1. You put in your zipcode, and choose the restaurant(s) you'd like to visit.
  2. Add them to your cart.  Use code SALE at the checkout.  Your discount is taken off.
  3. Take them to the restaurant.  Tell the server you have it.  They will deduct $25 (or a higher value if that's what you chose) from your total and you pay the difference.  Super simple!
There are a few terms, though.
  • Most certificates state that they must be used on a minimum $35 purchase.
  • They add 18% tip to your bill.
  • Some restaurants specify dates/times that they cannot be used (I have one I bought forever ago that can't be used on Fridays, so we've never used it.)

Here's what it looks like:
  • Pay $2 for the $25 GC.
  • Dine, and try to keep your total just over $35.  We'll estimate $40 after tip is added.
  • They deduct your $25 GC.  You owe roughly $15 (plus the $2 you paid to purchase it).
Not a bad deal, huh?

Ebates is currently offering 15% cash back for this site, also.

No Aldi Ad This Week

I did not receive an Aldi ad this week, which I thought was a little strange.  I went to their website to check out the ad, but the only ads listed for this week and next week were in-store ads.

There was not even any produce advertised in the in store ads (there usually isn't when I pick up the in store ads).

I'm not sure if they've taken a short break from sending out the ad flyers, or if they've stopped completely, which would make me very sad.

You see, Aldi has always had astonishing produce prices advertised down the right side or their ad, and I would be so excited to go there knowing the great produce I would get and the low price I would pay.

I'm hoping we will be back to getting the ads very soon  (did anybody get one today??? Maybe it was just me?)

Need A Little Advice About Children's Shoe Organization

At my house, we have a problem.  I have no idea where to keep my children's shoes.

You see, keeping them lined up along the floor isn't an option because we have two little mini dachshunds who absolutely adore chewing...on anything really, but shoes and My Little Pony's seem to be their favorites.  They've gotten a lot better, and we've gotten better at putting our shoes up high, but there is still a lack of space.

I LOVE those over the door shoe organizers, but our closet doors in the girls room are those sliding doors that fold in the middle, so that just won't work.

Since we are moving both girls into one room, I really need to find a solution to my "what to do with the shoes" problem.

We're tried putting them on top of dresser's and things but that tends to be very messy.  And 5 and 2 year olds aren't very good at returning their shoes to the proper place, so that is also a constant battle I fight.

If any of you have any tips for me, I'd love to hear them.  If you have written or know of any posts that have pictures, leave a link in the comments, please!

Menu Plan: Eating From The Freezer

I was planning on doing some cooking this week while my husband was home, but I decided that after all of the other things we're getting done this week, that we should just eat some things we already have prepared in the freezer.

Here's what we'll be having for dinner this week (from our freezer):

Monday:  Vegetable Beef Soup  (I actually made this Saturday in the crock-pot-recipe coming).

Tuesday:  We're going to the dollar theater, and may be eating out.

Wednesday:  Provencal Pork.

Thursday:  Turkey Taco Quiche

Friday:  Spaghetti

Saturday:  Roast and gravy

Sunday:  Cabbage Rolls

Check out more menu plans.

Getting Organized: A Busy Week For Me!

I hope that everyone had a very awesome Christmas.  We had a fun and relaxing day with some distant relatives who happen to live nearby.

And, now that the fun and relaxation has ended, the real fun begins.

Last week, my husband and I came up with a plan.  You see, when we had baby number 2, his office got transformed into a nursery, and his desk got moved out into the garage.  Now that winter is approaching (it hasn't actually gotten to Texas yet), and she is nearly 2 1/2, he decided that he would like to move his desk back into the house, so our girls will begin sharing a room.

However, there is *WAY* too much stuff between the two of our girls (I'm working on that, too!), to fit in one of our small bedrooms, so we've decided to convert the nursery into a playroom, and move the futon into there from our guest bedroom  (we have a very small 4 bedroom house with minuscule closets, so we are always trying to find better uses for space).  Then he is going to put his desk in the guest room.

We've planned out tackling a room everyday, so here is what our agenda for the week looks like:

Monday:  Clean out guest bedroom.

  • This is mostly going to involve pulling everything out of our junk closet.  Some needs to be moved to the garage, and a lot of it is games and puzzles, which will get moved into the play room.
Tuesday:  Convert the nursery to a playroom.
  • This is going to involve taking apart and putting away the toddler bed/bedding, going through the toy boxes that are already in there (tossing anything broken), clearing off and clearing out closets, moving dressers, etc.
Wednesday:  Cleaning the girls room.
  • This is going to involve moving some toys from this room into the newly cleared out playroom (including going through toy boxes--2 of them with puzzles dumped in the bottoms--oh joy!), rearranging some dressers, clothing, closets, etc.
Thursday:  Our bedroom/bathroom
  • We all know our rooms are the last to get cleaned because nobody ever goes in there.  I don't want to talk about it, but it must be done!  LOL.
Friday:  Garage
  • This is going to be mostly a husband job, and my normal shopping day so I will likely be shopping with both girls to get them out of his way, but there will be a lot of things from in the house that need to be moved out there, and some things that need to be put back into the attic, like the Christmas tree, if we can find time to take it down.
Saturday:  Backyard
  • It seems that fall finally happened while we were out of town last week.  With all the wind and storms, we came back to a blanket of leaves covering out backyard.  While my husband did rake up a big pile for the girls to jump in, its going to take all of up out there to get yard looking normal again.  I've also got some preparing the garden for winter (covering it with leaves and compost), and disposing of some dead potted plants that did not bounce back from our early freeze.

I'm hoping we have some time to relax on Sunday, but we'll see how it goes.

I bet you're wondering when I'm going to find time to blog in there, and well, we'll see how that goes, too! ;)  I have to take advantage of having my husband home for one more week from school, because I just can't move some of this stuff on my own.

I'll likely be pretty quiet on the blog this week, but in the midst of all of this, I'm always organizing some stuff I'd like to post about in the new year, so stick around and it should be a lot of fun.

And with that, I must get to work....
