My seeds have sprouted (most of them anyway). My garden rows are made. My coupons are clipped and organized (yes, on Sunday! woohoo!) New grocery ads won't come until Tuesday. So, what will I do with my Monday? My plan is to transplant my sprouts to my garden. I'll let you guys see the finished product, and then we will hope for the best. I've not had much luck with my garden in the past, but I'm trying some new plants this time. Hopefully they will work out. If not, at least my daughter had fun planting them. She loves to help pick stuff too. =)

I was not overly exicted when I received the grocery ads in my mailbox Tuesday morning. For the second week in a row, the sale prices seemed a bit, well, not really on sale. But, when I was sorting through my coupons I found something that disturbed me. I had $6 worth of Kroger catalina coupons that were expiring on 4/09. Why, that is today! I would not be able to save my $6 until next week when there will hopefully be a more couponer friendly ad. No, I must shop, and I must shop now! I needed to get a few things like milk and bread, so I skimmed through the ad and found a few things that I wanted to buy, and pulled out a few coupons to bring with me. I also decided that I would go to Tom Thumb and grab a few things also. I have a $30 gift card for that store, since I transferred one of my husbands prescriptions there. They had a few good things on sale, perhaps not the cheapest i had seen them, but pretty good. I went there first, and grabbed what I needed and went to the register. I handed her my coupons, paid and left, and then realized that I had not used my gift card. Grrrrrr!
These two trips today were not the best I've done by far, but they aren't too bad. If you are new to using coupons, you can see that even when the sales are not very good, you can still get pretty good deals if you match the prices up with coupons. Here is everything I got. The total was $17.58.
I spent a good portion of Monday and Tuesday reorganizing my coupons and checking expiration dates. I wanted to show a little bit about how I do that.

I admit that it can be hard to keep up with, and I know that it is not the best system for everyone, but for the amount of coupons I have it works much better for me than one of those little accordian files. Also, remember that Wal-Mart will price match produce from these stores. I once did that when the avocados were on sale at this store for 10 for $1.

I have found this store to be expensive on many of their grocery items, but they have incredible prices on meat and produce. I will go to get the sale prices, and buy $10 worth of milk, bread, eggs, etc to get the low prices. I love it.
Ok, so I had a cute little picture to post, but it is refusing to upload this morning. =( Oh, well. This one wasn't very impressive. Just a few little plant sprouts. It has been so windy here that the lid keeps blowing off of the planter, no matter what I weigh it down with, and the markers have blown away too. So, I pretty much have no idea what is planted in the rows. I guess it will be a surprise. =)
Read more...After I loaded up my coupons at cellfire.com, I went to see if there were any new ones available at Shortcuts. I found only a couple for grocery items, and several for magazines, so if you usually pick up your favorite magazine at a grocery store that uses Shortcuts, you are in luck.
If you have any Betty Crocker Warm Delights, check inside the wrapper before you toss it. I found a coupon inside for $0.75/2. It was the last of three I had gotten (for free with coupons), so I think I probably threw away the other two packets without noticing. =(
I took inventory of my freezer today to see what meals I still had in there and reorganize it. Here is what it looks like now:
I hear a lot of people talk about having their own garden as a way to save money. I will be the first person to tell you that my garden probably does not save me any money. Why, you may ask? Well, we have awful soil. Here and there we've added bagged soil and compost to it, and even rented a tiller once, but underneath it's just too rocky.
Now, I told myself that I just wasn't going to mess with it this year because we didnt really have much money to put into it. I was sad about that choice though because it is such a fun thing to do, and my daughter enjoys it too. Then, one day I went to look for something in the back shed, and I found some seeds that I thought I had used up last year. Lot's of them, too. So I began busting up my little garden plot and getting some weeds out of it. Today, my daughter and I planted some seeds in one of those seed starter trays. I know I got a kinda late start, but with this crazy weather and two weeks ago we had 6 inches of snow. When they sprout my husband is going to get some rows fixed up for us to plant them in. I'm going to plant some herbs and spinach in a long window planter. I hope those do well. It would be so nice to be able to go out and pick a salad. =) Here is a picture of my little garden helper.
...I would not have had to step foot inside of Wal-Mart, which was sold out off all the individually wrapped Easter candy (which is what i needed to stuff the plastic eggs with for the church egg hunt). I ended up getting a big bag of the cheap stuff from the regular candy aisle instead of the Easter aisle, which probably saved me money anyway. But, this is not about Wal-mart. It's about Aldi.
Aldi is a new store around here. It just opened up a few weeks ago. When I noticed that it was being built, I started reading good things about it on other blogs, and I must say I love it! What an easy way to save money on essentials without having to worry with coupons. They don't sell many brand name items, and they don't do much advertising. The store brand items are very low-priced. In fact I was walking through the store looking for things on my list and noticed that the boxed macaroni and cheese (which I did need, but I had forgotten to add to my list) was priced at only $0.35 per box!!! This is my daughters favorite meal (along with chicken nuggets, which I found last time I shopped there for $3.99 a bag--and shaped like jungle animals at that! No more Tyson for me.) So I grabbed a few mac and cheese, a few packets of seeds that were on special for $0.69 (more on that later), and all of the things on my shopping list that were most urgent. Here's what I ended up with:
.....pretty much nothing spectacular. We hung out around the house and enjoyed my husband's one day off from work. Made some more baby food. Cleaned house a bit. Read a little. Not really sure where the time went, but we were all thinking it was Saturday all day long, but we have a whole other Saturday to enjoy tomorrow. Gotta love that. =)
