Last Minute Grocery Shopping: Saved 70%

Since I was feeling bad last week, I didn't make it out to any of the stores.  Today I realized that it had to be today, even though it was rainy and the temp was dropping rapidly.

First I went to Tom Thumb, aren't with a handful of store coupons (from the ad)/manufacturer coupons to stack.

Here's what I got at Tom Thumb:

Two Ken's @$0.99 each with store coupon--used 2 $1/1 =FREE
Two Danimals Crunchers @  $1.69 each--Used $1/2 printable= $1.19 each
Two Chex @  $0.99 each--Used $0.50/2 (doubled) = $0.49 each
Two Nature Valley @  $1.79 each--Used $0.50/2 (doubled) =  $1.29 each

Was a little bummed when I got to the store because only the Nature Valley Crunchy were included, and I prefer the sweet and salty variety, but I decided to give them a try anyway.

Total Shelf Price:  $25.32
Total Sale Price (After Store Coupon):  $10.92   (Already 57% savings)
Price Paid After Coupons:  $5.92  (77% Savings)

It also printed me a $5/$20 coupon good through the end of the month, so I'm hoping there's a good sale next week so I can make use of those extra savings!

Then it was off to Albertsons.  I grabbed a few Mega Items, and a few other things on my list, and then my coupons and I wandered around a bit, so I found a few things to buy that I had not intended to, but all good deals.

Here's what I grabbed:

There are two fuzzy impulse buys there in the foreground.   $9.99 slippers marked down to $2.49. I bought a size too big for each of my girls, and plan to keep them for stocking stuffers.  The little one was with me, but I told her she couldn't have them yet, and I'm betting she completely forgets before long.

I'm not going to itemize everything I bought in this trip, but I paid $30.57 in all, and my receipt says  I saved $64.92 so that means the shelf price of everything was $95.49, so I saved 68%.

All said today, I spent $36.49 on items that sale for $120.81, for an average of 70% saved at both stores.  That's right about where I like my savings rate to be when using coupons, and I was about to stock up on some snack items we've been without for quite some time around here.

Did you do any last minute shopping today?

Getting Back To Couponing

I know I haven't posted in quite a while, and all I can say is what a wild few weeks!  Sometimes life just happens and you have to take a step back and deal with it.  I think the main thing was that I had taken on too many tutoring hours and that just made everything spiral out of hand.

My hours have calmed down now, and I am slowly but surely getting things back to normal around here (well, I was until my daughter got sent home with round 2 of headlice in 5 weeks time!  That caused a bit of extra laundry and time restraints!)

But, yes I am still around.  I am trying to refocus on my wise spending habits, as we had taken a detour through lack of menus and fast food drive throughs!  I've gotten all my coupons back in order, and for some reason that really helped me realize that there were really good deals to be had at the grocery stores this week!  (It's amazing what being familiar with your coupons will do!)

I was afraid I had completely forgotten how to use coupons it had been so long, but I think I did pretty well with an angry 3 year old in tow!

I went to two stores today:  Kroger and Albertsons.   I have been finding good milk markdowns when I go to Kroger, and today was no exception.   It wasn't necessarily a great "deal" today, as the mark down made the price the same as I would have paid at Aldi, but it saved me a trip to Aldi to get milk, so I was pleased.

Here is everything I got at Kroger:

I got 2 sets of mega items, plus a few other items we needed, and I spent $30.44 in all.   I thought that sounded a little high, but I was pleased still....until I just started looking over my receipt!  Those two jars of cheez whiz that you see marked for $0.35 each actually rang up for $4.29 each, so I was overcharged by nearly $8!  (I might have noticed had the angry three year old not been trying to grab candy!)  I will be going back down there to get my refund this afternoon!

After Kroger, I ran into Albertsons for a few of the frozen items they had on sale:

After coupons, I ended up paying just $5.89 for all of this.

I am stocked back up on fish sticks and chicken nuggets for a while, and I got them at below Aldi prices (that is my comparison these days).  I'm going to attempt to curb our late night pizza cravings with  frozen instead of Pizza Patron.  I've got some easy breakfast that will be a treat for the kids because we don't have them often and they are getting bored of the same old options.  I'm excited about my Silk because it's been soooo long since I've bought some, and I am ready for egg dying I do believe.

Did you get any good deals this week?

Albertsons Mega Sale: Saved 78%

Yesterday morning, after I had a glance at the new sale ads, I was spending my 15 minutes working on my coupons.  I was clipping the 1/27 SS, and noticed that there were coupons in there that matched with the Mega Sale going on at Albertsons this week.

Since I was already clipping the coupons, and since I was already heading down to the library, which is just another block or two away, I decided to leave a little bit early and run by Albertsons before the library.

I had made out my list of the 10 items I was going to get, and I brought only those coupons along.    I quickly grabbed the items and was on my way.

Here are the things I grabbed:

Total Shelf Price:  $22.50
Total Sale Price:   $17.22 (minus $5 mega sale coupon = $12.22  Already 46% Savings.
Price Paid After Coupons:   $5.02   78% Savings

The cashier laughed when I showed her my list and that was exactly the price I had pre-calculated.  ;)

Albertsons has also begun it's Monopoly game once again.   I love the Monopoly game, not because I think I will win (but you never know!), but because sometimes those little blue game pieces contain coupons for FREE items, and sometimes they contain coupons for items that will be on sale at some point during the promotion (so hold onto them!)

This time, I only got one for 2 free game tokens, but that is just fine with me!  In the past, I have missed out on many weeks of this sale because I just did not have my coupons together, but right now I am almost completely finished getting all of my coupons clipped and filed into my binder, and I am going to be very intentional about shopping at Albertsons each week that I feel it is worthwhile so I can make the most of this promotion.

Shopping Trip: Kroger And Albertsons

I *finally* made it out to the store and used some coupons again today!   It had been so long that I was afraid I had forgotten how, but everything went very well.  I even was able to get some Halloween markdowns!

Here's what I picked up at Kroger:

Shelf Price:  $52.18
Sale Price:   $28.20    (already 46% savings)
Price Paid After Coupons:  $21.20      59% Savings

Here's what I picked up at Albertsons:

Shelf Price:  $62.21
Sale Price:   $24.56  (Already  61 % Savings)
Price Paid After Coupons:  $16.66    73 % Savings

Altogether today, I spent $37.86 on $114.39 worth of groceries.  That's an average savings of  67%!

Shopping Trip 8/20: Kroger & Albertsons

This morning I went to two stores.   I had not been shopping with coupons in a LONG time, and I had both girls with me so I thought that it very well could end up being a bust, but we actually had a pretty calm and successful outing.

Our first stop was Kroger.  I had a few things on my list that I wanted to get at Kroger, and also I just really enjoy hitting Kroger in the mornings because you never know what sorts of markdowns you are going to find!

I got one set of mega sale items, several SunnyD (and used this coupon), and some markdown items.

Total Shelf Price:  At *least*  $66.19  (I don't actually know the original prices of all the marked down items)
Total Sale Price:   $38.42
Price Paid After Coupons:  $30.54    At *least* 54% Savings

Then we went to Albertsons, and I got all of this:

Total Shelf Price:  $57.44
Total Sale Price:   $25.75
Price Paid After Coupons:  $15.31   73% savings

So altogether today I spent $45.85 on over $125 worth of groceries.   That's an average savings of over 63%.

Albertsons Trip 7/9 75% Savings

I had not been shopping with coupons in a very, very long time.   I was beginning to run out of things I normally have plenty of in my pantry, and I noticed that Albertsons was having a pretty good sale this week.

I spent a very long time going through all of my coupons, and I'm pretty sure that the people being me in line were thinking very not nice things about me, but I'm ok with that.   I saved nearly $90!  When you are saving $90, I don't think it much matters what other people are thinking.

Here's what I got:

Total Shelf Price:   $120.41
Total Sale Price:    $62.83  Already 48% Savings!
Price Paid After Coupons:    $30.54    75% Savings!

I even used a coupon on the steaks!  $2 off when I bought 3 Kikkoman.   I also got a $1 off my next purchase for buying Kikkoman!

After this trip, we changed up the menu a little bit, and had steaks and tonight with a side of Suddenly Salad! ;)  I ended up paying just $4.14 for the whole pack or about $2/lb for petite sirloins.  It was a tasty treat!

My girls got to the groceries before I could put them away.   They made a castle for their unicorns.  The Ozarka bottles are supposed to be a sound sensor that lets them know when predators are approaching their castle.  My girls are a trip!  And they might want to check their sensors, because I think a tiger got in...

Albertsons Trip 6/1

My oldest daughter and I made a quick run to Albertsons this afternoon while the little one was sleeping.   Mostly, I wanted to get $0.88 blackberries, but there were a few more items on sale or that I had some coupons for that I picked up while I was there.

Here's what I came home with:

Total Shelf Price  (not knowing how much the blackberries originally cost):   $34.96

Total Sale Price:   $20.18

Price Paid After Coupons:   $7.72   and I got back a $1 OYNO coupon!

That's a savings of at least 78%  (factoring in no savings for the blackberries because the receipt doesn't list any.)

I got the Kikkoman absolutely free because I had $2/1 coupons (no longer available) and they were on sale for $1.99.   Because I bought 2, I got a $1 OYNO coupon when I paid, so I essentially made $1 off of the terriyaki sauce!   I used this Trix coupon to get $0.88 cereal and this Yo Crunch coupon (facebook offer--like page and click "savings" tab) to score $0.19 yogurts, and the Tabasco coupon from 4/29 RP to get $0.08 hot sauce.   I also had coupons for the ketchup and crunch in munch that I had found inside of a package at some point. I love those kind of surprises!

So there you have my rushed Albertsons trip, trying to make it back home before the hubby had to leave for work.  We accomplished the whole trip in 40 minutes!  That's my kind of shopping! =)

My Albertsons Trip: Always Waiting "Til The Last Day....

There were some things that I wanted to buy at Albertsons this week.  Not many, but a few.   Mainly I wanted to redeem some FREE product coupons that I had won playing their Monopoly game.  They were also having that awesome 25 & 50 cent sale going on and there were several things on that sale I wanted to pick up....and I found a few more that I *did* pick up while shopping that I did not intend to, but they were good prices.

I wanted to get Brown Gravy mixes for a quarter each, but the store was all out.  I also wanted the $0.50 Allen's canned veggies, but all varieties were gone.  Also..the $0.25 salt.  Gone.

But, I did find another pretty good deal:  I snagged a 25lb. bag of flour on clearance for just $6.99.   That works out to $1.40 per 5lb. bag.  Not incredible, but definitely cheaper than I've seen anywhere, and I plan to be using a lot of flour pretty soon, as I've been making a lot of foods from scratch lately, and I intend to follow along some with the Fill Your Freezer Challenge going on at Money Saving Mom, so I thought this would be great to get!  (Anybody else participating?)

Here's what I bought today:

Shoes boxes just to lift items off the damp carpet.
Total Shelf Price:  $59.00
Total Sale Price:   $41.74
Price Paid After Coupons:  $21.58   63% Savings

I had FREE Monopoly Coupons for the 8 Piece Deli Fried chicken  (our lunch and probably midnight snacks!) and the bag of sugar.  I had $0.50/1 Monopoly coupons for the Grill Mates, which made them FREE since they were on sale for $0.50.  I also had $0.50/1 Monopoly coupons for the pasta, making those just $0.49/box.  The only other coupons I used were two FREE Purex coupons I had gotten by mail.  The ice cream was a total splurge, but at $0.25/cup ($3 for the bag) and already perfect portions that I don't have to scoop for my kids, I thought it was a good treat! ;)

Now, I'm off to go bake some banana bread!

Albertsons Trip 4/10 Saved 59%

Made a trip to Albertsons today.  There were a few deals I wanted to take advantage of, and there wasn't really much on my shopping list for the week besides milk, which I just picked up there instead of making a special trip to Aldi.  I took the opportunity to stock up on some juice pouches for lunch boxes and summertime.

Here's what I got  (sorry, its a bit blurry..my camera wasn't cooperating so I had to use my phone):

Total Shelf Price:  $107.03
Total Sale Price:   $66.12    Already 38% Savings!
Price Paid After Coupons:    $42.41 +$1.25 tax =  $43.72    59% Savings

On top of that, this week they were giving double Monopoly tickets, so between what my purchase earned me and redeeming 6 free tickets (they gave me 12), I came home with 66 Monopoly tickets.

I've already gone through them, I won a FREE 8 piece chicken from the deli, a clif bar, and a bag of sugar, plus 38 more bonus tickets  (if I run out and redeem those today that will be double!)

Albertsons Trip 4/3 --Oh, Hail!

I haven't been doing a whole lot of coupon shopping lately, and I know I need to because I'm running out of a lot of things....like I was down to the very last bottle of laundry detergent!  How did that happen??

I woke up this morning very early, and thought I might get my trip planned out before my little one woke up, but she woke up very early, too.  Then, I got sidetracked organizing my coupons (more on that in a bit).  I was trying to hurry that up so I could squeeze in a morning trip, but then I looked up and noticed this:

She had been down on the floor playing with some scissors and an old magazine and then she just went and crawled up on the couch and passed out.  I decided to let her nap and go out shopping after lunch.  I knew that some rain was on the way, but the hourly forecast didn't predict it until 4ish so I thought I would have plenty of time.  I leisurely finished going through the rest of my coupons, flipping through all of my inserts and seeing which could be discarded to make room in my file box for last weekend's coupons.  I got completely finished with that, and then fixed us some lunch.  We ate and left the house just before 1pm.

When I pulled up at the store, I could see dark clouds rolling in in the distance behind the store, and a lady rolled her window down and hollered something at me.  I'm still battling this ruptured ear drum, so I'm hard or hearing and the wad of cotton I have to keep in there doesn't help matters.  I don't know exactly what she said, but it was something about a tornado.  "But it's not even raining yet", I shrugged to myself and casually went in to do my shopping.

I had a couple FREE coupons for Purex detergent, and I happened to luck out because it was BOGO FREE, so I got 4 FREE bottles of detergent!

Albertsons was having a Mega Sale, and I love it when they have them because they have great deals (and they still double, unlike Kroger!), but they have very poor in store signage for their Mega Sales (again, unlike Kroger who has awesome signs!)   I can never tell if i'm getting the right items because they say Mega Sale NOWHERE!

Ok, to be fair, there were a couple vague signs on freezer doors...for example, I was looking for the Bird's Eye vegetables.  The sign on the door near then said that the ones on the sale were the one's priced at $1.29 (mage sale would make them $0.79), but NONE of them were priced $1.29!  I intended to get 10 bags because I had a few coupons to use, but I ended up only getting 2 bags and I had to ask the cashier about those.  I'm still not certain I got all my $5 offs because their receipts are pretty confusing also.  (I did!  I found it!  All is well!)

Here is everything I got at Albertsons:

Total Shelf Price:   $108.53
Total Sale Price:    $67.87   (Already 37% Savings)
Price Paid After Coupons:   $35.31 + .44 tax = $35.75     67% Savings

When we walked out of the store (not yet 2pm, mind you), it was raining..not much, but raining.  As we drove home, the rain became heavier, and as I was unloading the groceries from the back of the van, it began to hail on me!  Not my idea of fun!

Safely inside the house, my 2 year old watched the hail bounce off the patio in amazement as I put the groceries away.  My freezer is full.  My husband is drooling over cheap pizza, and I'm praying my kids will like toaster strudels!

After I got my groceries put away, I still had to deal with the aftermath of an Albertson's shopping excursion these days...

I'm loving this Monopoly game, actually.  Last time, I had one that won $2 cash (which is still in the pocket of my soaking wet jeans I had to remove upon my return).  This trip, I received 11 game pieces.  I won a FREE pack of Capri Sun and two bonus game tickets, as well as various other coupons, and I still have all the online codes left to enter.

I would have gotten this post up much sooner, but it was now 3pm..time for school to release and my daughter to get on the bus.  Only, there were tornado warnings and none of the buses were released to run yet.  My only choice was to leave my 5 year old at school until they decided to let the buses run (in which case she would not have gotten home until around 5:30) or venture out into the storm and retrieve her.

The rain was picking up as we prepared to go...digging back out the jackets that I'd just packed away in the back of the closet.  I drove over to the school very carefully amid blasts of lightning and roars of thunder, waiting for the next tornado to pop out of the sky (there had been several touch down by this point...and apparently one not far away while I was out and about).  We parked and ran in through the rain.  I couldn't go through the carpool line because she is a bus rider, so I had to go inside and properly sign her out.   Once we were back in the van and all strapped in, the second I turned the wheel to pull back into traffic, the hail began once more.

This time I had to drive back to my house with it pummeling my van, slowly rolling through flooded streets.  The rain was just letting up as I pulled into the driveway safely and breathed a sigh of relief.  My husband still could not leave.  Being a teacher, he was stuck at school until they decided to let the buses run, also, so his last period class was 3 hours long today.

Thankfully, we all made it back home safely and the storms passed us by without causing any major damage.  This is a bad line of storms, and it is still moving through East Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma as I type this, so please remember these people and say a prayer for their safety!
