FREE Fiction For Kindle

I thought I'd share with you a few that I have downloaded myself in the past few days, that are still free (though for how long, no one knows...be sure they still say $0.00 before buying).

Before, I share the books, though, let me just say that I am currently not reading a novel, and I haven't been for a few weeks, which is very odd for me. I LOVE to read. I found my newest favorite author from a free Kindle download, and then I had to track down all of her other books at the library, and now I'm waiting for her to finish writing the next one.

So as I wait, I have all of these other books available to me (the ones I'm about to share, along with MANY, MANY other's I've previously downloaded), and I just don't know where to start! Weekly Menu

I meant to have my menu completely finished yesterday, and I really did make good progress on it (I planned breakfasts and lunches, and even made a lunchbox planner so I could see at a glance what to toss in there without giving it much thought at the end of a busy day).

The one thing I did not finish up was my dinner plans, which is what I usually post. I still don't have the weekend completely mapped out, but I'm running low on meats, so I am waiting to see what sales the new ad week brings tomorrow.

So far here's what I have:

Monday: Last night we had Meat Loaf Muffins (using the recipe described here and made in muffin tins instead of loaves--liked it better!) from the freezer, Mashed Potatoes from the freezer, and peas.

Tuesday: Tonight I am thawing a bunch of pork chops, and I will bake them all. After we eat tonight, I should have at least two more dinner sized sets to freeze. I've done this before and we love them. We will have salad with this.

Wednesday: Soup from the freezer

Thursday: Gumbo from the freezer (just make fresh rice!--This is also getting taken as a school lunch in our new thrift store $2 pink Arctic Zone Thermos (which is awesome! I'd link you, but I cannot seem to find one on Amazon..)

Friday: Catfish (still haven't eaten those!)

The weekend is still up in the air, but I'm hoping for some great meat deals this week, and if not, I can always pull something out of the freezer!

Kroger Trip 9/11

After my CVS trip, I headed over to Kroger. I had intended to also go to Aldi today, but decided that there were so few things I needed, I would just pick them up while I was at Kroger, and there honestly wasn't that much of a price difference anyway.

Here's what I picked up:

I got one set of Mega Sale items. I was looking for Multigrain Pringles, but they were all sold out, so I opted for Capri Sun instead. I didn't have coupons, but at $1.49 that beats the Aldi price by $0.40 and we will definitely use these in the lunchbox, so it wasn't a bad substitution. I think I'm stocked up with drinks for the whole fall semester now.

I'm going to be doing some freezer cooking, but I was out of pans. Well those aluminum foil pan 3 packs are what I was going to get, and they were on sale B2G1 FREE, so that was a nice surprise. I was going to buy 2 anyways. ;)

Also, what they are sitting on is a 12 pack of kroger brand toilet tissue. It was something that I planned on getting at Aldi, but a little coupon fairy had left a Kroger store coupon from a home mailer sitting right in front of them, so I grabbed it and saved $0.85! ;)

I was also nearly out of frozen veggies, so I grabbed a few while I was there. $0.05 more than Aldi, but so worth it since the stores are in opposite directions from my house.

I also found this fresh organic mint marked down. I've never actually used fresh mint, but for that price I figured it would be a nice thing to try. I'm totally open to suggestions!

Total Shelf Price: $55.64

Total Sale Price: $40.45

CVS Trip 9/11 89% Savings

I made a quick trip to CVS this morning before heading over to Kroger. I had $8 in existing ECBs and was especially wanting to get the children's Colgate toothpaste, as my supply of kids toothpaste had completely run dry.

Here's what I got today:

Why, yes that is a wrapper from chocolate that didn't make it out of the parking lot...but come on...free chocolate!

The other candy was a bit of a splurge, but I needed a little bit of filler after my extra bucks, and I've seen some yummy looking things on pinterest using candy bars, so I figured I'd just go ahead a grab a few packs while I could get an ECB back.

The small shampoo in the middle was something I had gotten a free beauty club coupon emailed to me for, so I picked that up while I was there.

The red machine printed me out a $5 off Centrum Flavor burst (which I had read would be free after a coupon stack), however my store did not even have them in the planogram on the shelf. The manager looked them up for me in the computer, and there was one store in my area across town that had two bottles, so be on the lookout for that coupon, but beware you may have issues redeeming it!

Total Shelf Price: $23.73

Total Sale Price: $16.16

Price Paid After Coupons/ECBs: $2.64 and I got back $5.67 in ECBs.

That's a savings of 89%!

Its Soup Season! + New Coupons!

And, yes, that is a tutu under there! ;)

Fall is absolutely my favorite time of year. In Texas, it brings much sought after relief from the sweltering heat of summer, and when the air starts turning cooler, nothing can warm you up like a bowl of soup!

I am a frequent cooker of soups. In fact, we like to eat them year round, not just in the cold months. Plus, they freeze well, so my freezer has several varieties at the ready at all times.

But those are usually dinner meals. For lunch, I almost have never thought far enough ahead to have them thawed. So, for this meal, I like to have canned soup on hand.

Fall is the absolute best time of year to stock up on canned soups. They start going on sale frequently, and coupons become abundant. I am usually able to stock up for the year or at least until the weather gets hot again, during the fall.

We took a break from eating the canned soups over the hot, hot summer, but this is all that remains of what I purchased last fall, so it is time to stock back up again!

I was very pleased to see a couple new soup coupons begin to trickle out this morning!

Getting Back Into The Swing Of Things

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you've probably noticed that my posts over the summer have been pretty sporadic and at times almost non-existent. The reason for that was just simply that it was summer. I told myself that I was not going to waste away the time I had with both of my kids home sitting in from of the computer all day, and I didn't.

We really had a fun summer. We visited family in Louisiana, we read lots of books and went to fun children's programs at the library nearly every week, had a steady stream of visitors from home, and did a lot of splashing in the back yard pool. We also enjoyed my husband having a whole entire month of not having to work 2 jobs. It was such a blessing having him home. For some reason, when he is home we all get pretty laid back. It's a good thing to be at times, but we were all getting a little too comfortable with being slackers around here.

The week before school started (3 weeks ago), I decided it was high time I whipped this family back into shape. We hung up chore charts, cleaned, got everything ready and planned out for school to start, cleaned some more, filled the freezer with some breakfasts and lunches, cleaned a little more, and started counting down the days until school began. My oldest was going to first grade and she was beyond excited to go back.

The night we met the teacher came, and my oldest began running a fever. This was Friday. School started Monday. She was still running a fever all day Saturday, and my three year old got one that day, too. She was sooooooo worried she was going to have to miss the first day of school. She went so far as to ask me if she could just hold an ice pack to her head and cool it off so she could still go. Most kids are wanting to fake sick, and mine is trying to fake well!

Well thankfully Sunday morning her fever had broken and she felt fine all day. Her little sister did not. She still had her fever, and she said her stomach hurt and hardly touched any food all day. That evening as I picked her up and put her in her chair at the dinner table, she begin throwing up. The poor baby threw up 7 times within about 3 hours.

In the middle of her being sick, we got a call from my husband's cousin who lives in the New Orleans area. She was planning to evacuate before Isaac hit and wanted to come to our house. I didn't mind a bit, but she has three kids (7, 3 and 9 months) and I was worried they would get sick with whatever was going around here (they didn't!). My husbands parents were also coming up (they'd planned their trip a month ago, and it just so happened to coincide with when they should have been leaving anyhow!)

So, school started Monday, and Tuesday his cousin arrived, and Wednesday his parents arrived. We had 6 extra people and 2 extra dogs in the house, but we all had a wonderful time. I'm actually very glad for the time our kids got to spend together, as they have never really gotten a chance to get to know these distant cousins, and they all had a blast playing together.

The cousins left on Saturday when their power was finally restored, and the grandparents stayed through Friday since his job still had no power, and I needed a sitter on Thursday while I went to a dental appointment, so it was perfect!

So, after a full 11 days of houseguests, things are finally back to normal around here. Now I'm not complaining about having guests AT ALL. We actually love having family and friends visit. It's just that we love it so much we just spend all of our time visiting and not doing much else. Today is a lovely, cool Saturday, and we've been hard at work around here trying to whip the house back into shape.

So now its time to get back into some of our normal school year routines, and I'm hoping that means that I can be a bit more consistent with my posting on here. I've got some ideas, and I'm working on a plan for how to carry them out, and once I've got that all squared away I will let you all know about it.

Thank you for bearing with me during this busy season of life as a parent and of being a native Louisianian. Rest assured that I am still around and will still be posting as I am able as I get back into the swing of school year life. It's been a pretty unusual first two weeks of school and the kids are still missing their visitors and playmates. Getting them back into their routine and daily schedule is going to be a task, but I know it's what they both need at the moment, as do I. So, wish me luck, and hang in there with me. I'll be back on a normal posting schedule hopefully within the week!
