Needing Some Advice On Organization

One of my goals for the new year was to become more organized.  This has really been something that my family has struggled with.  It has become a huge problem in my daughter's room.  We do not have a system in place for her to know where to put things back up after she plays with things, so they get left out or shoved under her bed.

I planned to tackle her room and get it in order at the first of the year, but then we had my husband's hospital stay and it just never happened.  This morning my daughter was asking to rearrange her room, so we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to straighten and sort everything.  We have dug everything out from under her bed and sorted like items in grocery bags lined up down the hallway.

This is really the best idea we could come up with for temporary sorting.  Now we need to find these items a permanent home.  My husband thinks, and he is probably right, that we should fork out a little bit extra money for a quality organization type system to put in her room.    She will be 5 in May, and her younger sister, now 18 months, will be sharing a room with her before we know it, so we are wanting a system that is easy enough for the younger one to use, yet not too easy to knock over and dump everywhere, as toddlers are quite happy to do. ;)

I thought I would ask you guys what works for you.  Do you have a system that you love?  Have you seen a great blog post about this sort of thing?  Leave a comment below, or a link to a blog post or a retail website of the item you use and love.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Negative comments greatly appreciated too, if you have had problems with a particular method.  If we are going to spend a bit on something (instead of grabbing plastic bins from the $0.99 store like I suggested), then I want to make sure we get it right!

Thanks!

Hi, I found your blog from Simply CVS. I have seen plastic tubs work very effectively if placed on shelves that only hold 1 or 2 in a stack. More than that and it becomes a mess. Printing small pics of the items to go inside is helpful too. In my sons' room in our apt we just stacked some sturdy boxes up and placed his toys inside. It was very effective to keep things separated but not have a huge expense for shelving. Here is a link to a post with a picture of his closet. http://www.thriftytexaspenny.com/2010/10/reduce-reuse-repurpose.html

i totally just left a long comment on your blog, but then my browser crashed when i tried to submit it. I like the boxes. I'm waiting on an organizer I found at walmart.com to arrive, but I think we will need more and theres another kid too, so the boxes are a great idea.
